Chrysalis by TysonTan Chrysalis by TysonTan

Anthropomorphic version, design and artwork by Tyson Tan.

EDIT: 2013-02-26, added more detail, subtle expression adjustment, simple background and color management fix.

This is my anthropomorphic version of Queen Chrysalis of the changelings. In this picture, I depicted her as a younger queen, not long after her ascending to the throne. She was still a shy and gentle girl here.

I really liked their take on Queen Chrysalis. Unlike most ruler villain who would just sit behind the curtain, she as the queen risked her life to infiltrated enemy territory, all alone, fighting bravely against enemies that much more powerful than her, for the fortune of her people. Even though she looked mean and evil in her plots, deep in her heart she might just wanted to find her true love. Besides, if changelings depend on LOVE to live, then I think they are not necessarily BAD, don't they? At least Shinning Armor's love didn't seem to be affected at all after the event.

I guess Queen Chrysalis may actually just wanted to JOIN Equestria, but she had forgot how to be kind to other races, after all the hardships her kind may had suffered. Well, just another fanboy imagination! Hope you enjoy the picture!

First of all, I want to start by saying that this is a really nice oeuvre.

The colors in this picture are very well thought out. The style is beautiful and well executed. Its very clean, but in that same sense, I find it lacks a little detail. Compared to the dress that has attention invested into the blending and different tones, the hair and the top half of her body seems to be cell shaded. It would be better to add a little more depth in shading so it would almost match that of the dress. It stands out even more because the tail is shaded in the same way as the dress and makes the hair look flat.

Just a small addition, Her hands look a bit chubby compared to the rest of her anatomy. The size of her neck gives off the impression that she is very slim but her hands give off the impression of a small, chubby physique. But it could be part of the style, so I wont push on the matter very much.

Over-all, its beautiful, It has a sort of impact at first sight and it catches peoples attention. I would have loved to see it with a background.

This piece has several amazing elements to it that make it stand out from the rest of the Queen Chrysalis images I've seen floating around on DA

To start, the choice the artist made to make the Queen anthropomorphic is an interesting choice indeed, and for the concept, it works. The proportions are right and the horse head doesn't look terribly awkward on a human like body.

The Flow of the dress is quite amazing and fairly realistic to how clothing would flow in real life. Though this flow is accented by the interesting style of shading, which is sharp and smooth where it needs to be and gives texture to the overall image.

Colors are spot on for the character, but as continuity goes for the actual character, I would have liked to see a bit more of an evil side to her, especially with the pixie like wings and the soft innocent expressions on the Queen's face. She looks as if she has a determination about her, but nothing truly evil.

I also find that certain elements of her shading are a bit off as she only has three forms of shading on her hair which gives it a dull appearance, particularly so in the AppleJack styled Ponytail. at the same time there is a green piece of something near the ruffles of her dress that i can't determine what exactly it is, but it looks too dark and stands out quite strangely.

All in all, I enjoy looking at this piece, but my overall complaints of it is the character herself looks like she's intended to be much younger than the Chrysalis we see in the show and he features are very soft and no where near as evil as she could have been portrayed as, or even hinted to being. The Wings and mane don't look like they belong to her, but I can see where the artist was going with the choices made.

But with that all said, the image is certainly a lasting impression as it's different than one would expect and it does have some pretty outstanding technical qualities to it

Well said on the description. So true. What Queen Chrysalis is doing is wrong... 'but she had forgot how to be kind to other races, after all the hardships her kind may had suffered.'
She just wants to belong...

Wow beautiful Queen Chrysalis fan art. Very good... A younger version of her...

i feel like Queen Chrysalis is much more powerful than Cadence. She took over the Crystal empire by her self! Cadence had to be helped by Shining Armor, Twilight, and Spike! And they almost lost!

I  think the queen didn't possess extraordinary power, but she got  the wit to (almost) make it work. That's why I liked her, as she took great danger for her people.

It's lovely to see her looking so gentle and beautiful, especially with that wonderfully flowing dress of hers. Amazing work. ^-^

Since your drawing the  royalty of MLP do you think you could draw prince blueblood and princess cadence?
Also this is very nicely done. You actually made her pretty.
