I'm very much looking forward to this project. I consider myself to be a retro gamer and I enjoyed this for everything it did to try and replicate the charm of a an old 90s platformer from the genesis and PS1 era of gaming and I hope this game delivers that same charm, if not improves it. I'm loving Lilac's and Carol's redesigns, Milla's is okay, and I'm kind of indifferent towards the designs of characters like Dali and Spade. As long as you keep them consistent, I'm fine with whatever. Overall, nice work on this scene. It pumps me up even more for this project.

Members of DeviantArt, behold your guardians of Avalice!

A scene like this could make for an exciting opening sequence in Freedom Planet 2. With the likes of Neera Li, Spade, and King Dail alongside the lead trio, it would appear that some former enemies have become allies following the events of the first game. This is something that I had very much been hoping for; in addition to supplementing the narrative, this could also possibly foreshadow more heroes joining the sequel’s cast of playable characters (Neera Li & Dail, in particular). Looking at this lineup, I like the idea of a battle-forged camaraderie being present among the group, akin to something like a team of superheroes. I personally hope that a theme of alliance will be showcased by the characters throughout both Classic Mode and especially Adventure Mode (via character dialogue).

Hands down, Milla is the highlight of this scene for me. Having apparently taken a level in badas*, her “Action Girl” potential is on full display as she goes airborne to blast an enemy right out of the sky— ‘Murder cubes, son!’ The sight of her using two psychic abilities simultaneously (readying a Phantom Block with one hand, while releasing a Shield Burst with the other), along with that determined expression on her face, suggests that Milla has become much more capable than the timid puppy who we met in the first game. The way in which her Shield Burst is causing the enemy to disintegrate looks very convincing to boot.

More can be said about the other characters too, of course. Lilac being at the forefront gives us an unobstructed view of her substantial redesign, and Carol’s motorcycle now appears a bit larger and more durable, while still looking just as fast and agile as before (if not more so). Cordelia’s projection amid the clouds gives her a peaceful yet cryptic presence; eyes closed, she appears to be praying whilst turned away from everyone else, and the angle also obscures her face some. It’s a common visual trope, but an effective one nevertheless that I personally like. It’s dramatic, and it helps to imply the character’s importance within the climactic areas of the plot.

I really like how Neera Li is using her Frost Arts here to “surf” atop the frozen air (like Iceman, or Rundas from Metroid), and General Gong appears to be shielding himself from the fire of the enemy Turretus while keeping his focus dead ahead. The uniforms of Neera & Gong also look rather state-of-the-art, mainly because to the neon-blue accents on them that almost seem to glow. The matching shade of purple is a nice feature of their uniforms, as well.

Dail with a sword in-hand makes for a valiant action pose, though it also would have been nice to see him wielding his father’s giant axe, seen briefly during the opening cinematic of the first game. Spade in particular looks much more identifiable as a panda now that his ears are rounded and black, and his new outfit provides him with a more mature & refined appearance. On-board the airship in the background, we see the (always dignified) Royal Magister alongside Major Zao, who appears to be either gleefully excited or just yawning out of boredom (both would suit his eccentric personality, I think). Standing next to them appears to be the Bird Guard, whose appearance serves as a subtle bonus that I’m sure fans of the first game will appreciate (‘Weh.’). Apparently leading the robot-attack is Serpentine, suited with new armor & robotic arms. With a raised fist, he almost appears to be cursing the team of heroes. While he understandably looks a bit isolated from the other characters, I have my own theory as to why he could also be present here…

Initially, I was confused with how Lilac is looking towards us, the viewers, and yet she appears to be pointing towards something up ahead of her that is out-of-frame. Is she pointing something out to us, or perhaps to the other characters (& just so happened to glance down towards us afterward)? I have another theory about her now, though: instead of Lilac literally pointing *at* something, perhaps the gesture is intended to inspire us with a “Call to Adventure”, getting us pumped to play the game the moment that a demo becomes available (as if she’s shouting, ‘Onward! Let’s GO!’). If that was actually the intention here, I think it works.

…Is it just me, or does Carol’s nose seem practically non-existent? Looking really closely at her, I think I can see a tiny mark on her face, right above her middle finger. That just might actually be the tip of her nose there (while the rest of it is simply hidden behind her hand), but it’s difficult to tell.

The scene as a whole has a good sense of depth & scale to it, and the surrounding landscape looks reminiscent of the “Dragon Valley” stage from the first game (or perhaps this *is* Dragon Valley). Outlines & details become softer, and colors fade slightly as characters & objects are placed further in the background (and/or from this perspective, more to the right). As streaks of wind and clouds of dust appear to either rush past, or be produced by the characters, it’s easy to imagine them all rushing forward, giving the scene a convincing sense of speed, as well. This is further emphasized by both the dramatic angle, which makes the ground appear to curve upwards ever so slightly, and Lilac’s emphasized posture mid-stride. With the way her foot is making contact with the ground, she looks as if she could explosively kick off & dash ahead of the group at any given moment, her hair flowing in the wind behind her. Perhaps that is what Lilac is getting at by pointing towards the sky up ahead of her; she’s signaling to us that she is about to soar off into the air with a Dragon Boost! ...That, or she's just pointing out how awesome Milla is looking at the moment (like 'Whoa! Are you SEEING this?!').

From the moment that I discovered the first Freedom Planet game back in 2014, I have been rather fascinated by it. The throwback to the 2-D action-platformers of the 90s, the energetic soundtrack, the animated cast of mascot-like characters— it’s all great stuff. Since viewing your initial (& avidly detailed) concept designs for Lilac, Carol, & Milla back in 2015, I had been highly-anticipating that your visual style would be featured in the next game of the series. When Freedom Planet 2 was officially unveiled, this artwork was the first piece of content that I saw for it, and when I realized that the art style was indeed your own, it was definitely one of the high-points of the announcement for me. That said, congratulations on joining GalaxyTrail’s development team as Concept Artist / Character Designer.

As the project progresses, I look forward to seeing more works from you, as the characters are undoubtedly in good hands. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes to all of the team members of GalaxyTrail.

Krist! I thought the characters looked familiar, but I couldn't believe it once I looked at the title. I've seen a trailer of the first game and it looks so incredible.

Congrats on getting involved in the project and this piece looks amazing.

Why'd Lilac get a redesign? I thought she was fine the way she is.

This is amazing, so brightly colored, sharp, and clean.  You really know what your doing when it comes to portraying action in a still scene.  I really like what you did with the redesigns, Lilac looks more like a royal guard now having grown in character from her fight with Brevon, I'm happy that Carol is still very similar to her original design yet you can tell she has matured (a little bit at least  ) I also like Milla's design. I've seen your other drawings of these characters and I can tell you enjoy working with them. I'm glad they chose you to work on the game. Best of luck and great work! :la:

I was a bit iffy of the art style in the recent trailer for Freedom Planet 2, but this has me completely excited. I like how some of the characters have new costumes and look a little older. It definitely seems like some time has passed since the last game. Interesting.

I've only recently had the opportunity to see DanSyron's work, but I can see you two are going to be on point when it comes to quality work. Good luck and have fun!!!

I love this piece. Your art style really does this series some justice. Although it'll take me a bit to get used to Lilac and Spade's new look, I like how you gave them a more Chinese inspired design. And the overall shot depicts how actiony the game is. Nicely done.
